the heart of Discovery Pathways

The Youth Environmental Leadership Program

Each year, we work with a small group of high-need youth from South Philadelphia, prioritizing immigrant, refugee, and underserved students who often face barriers to accessing outdoor spaces, leadership opportunities, and academic support. Students are referred through trusted community partners, school counselors, and mental health agencies.

Youth participate in an intensive, hands-on program that runs from spring through fall, with a nine-week summer core. Students learn kayaking, fishing, scientific water testing, watershed science, environmental justice, public speaking, teamwork, and leadership. All youth begin new to boating and water science. By the end of the program, they earn certifications and badges in kayak instruction, water testing, and watershed stewardship and help lead nearly all Discovery Pathways programs.

Youth leaders teach free community boating and fishing, lead park and neighborhood cleanups, mark storm drains, support health fairs, translate for families, and help design outreach in multiple languages. In 2025, youth spoke 12 or more languages and helped lead programs reaching tens of thousands of people across Philadelphia.

The program is trauma informed and relationship based. We focus on small groups to build trust, confidence, and deep impact. Students grow from feeling unsure or disconnected to becoming confident leaders who teach others, speak at public meetings, advocate for cleaner waterways, and support their families and communities.

Youth also receive tutoring, mentorship, stipends, and academic support. Many stay involved for multiple years and mentor younger students. Parents consistently report increased confidence, responsibility, and pride in their children.
